Urmila was Lakshmana's wife and younger sister of Sita from the great Hindu epic 'Ramayana'. She wished to accompany her husband Lakshamana when he was about to leave with Rama and Sita for fourteen years of exile in the forest. But Lakshamana requested her to stay back and take care of her in laws. He also said that he would not be able to take proper care of his brother and sister-in-law due to her responsibility. In the forest when Lakshamana was protecting Rama and Sita day and night, Nidra devi - the goddess of sleep appeared and said that every human being has to sleep according to the law of nature. Lakshamana then requested her to give all his sleep to his wife 'Urmila' on his behalf. Urmila agreed to this and remained a devoted wife for fourteen years. She slept throughout the exile of Rama, Lakshamana and Sita loosing on her youthful years of married life and served her duties. Although she has an important role as Sita and also rises up to a mark of an 'ideal wife', very less people know her as a part of 'Ramayana'. This painting represents all the soft spoken,silent and good nature people who are deprived of the recognition and acknowledgement they deserve due to their down to earth nature.
