The artwork is based on the resurrection of Jesus on the third day. Mary mother of Jesus and Mary Magdalene go early in the morning to the grave of Jesus and they find the grave empty and an angel inside who tells them that Jesus has risen. The grave was being guarded by roman soldiers who ran away when an angel appeared before them to roll away the stone. The cracked roman shield, broken spear and upturned helmet are the equipment of those roman soldiers who ran away in fear.
