This painting is from my Home series where most of the topics and subjects were about my life, my home, interactions with family, friends and pets. Home as a state of mind. Home as in Earth abundant with trees, hills, plants, rocks and all creatures large and small. This series also expressed a completeness that I was feeling and continue to feel. A feeling that I belonged....a feeling that I was home in my skin mentally, emotionally and physically.
Memories of Krishna baavi or well in the Telugu language, is a childhood memory of mine, when I was schooling in Rishi Valley School, in Andhra Pradesh, India. Our class teacher in the 6th, 7th and 8th grade often took us for a walk during class hours particularly after lunch when we were all less inclined to focus on classroom style studies which required one to be alert, awake and focused. We would most often land up at this old beautiful well, a veritable paradise as it was filled with small creatures and the trees and well were teeming with very watchable life. Our teacher would read an interesting book aloud to us, the words of which were enhanced by our fantasy inspiring surroundings. We completed several books in this way including the Mahabharata. Several decades later when I visited school I couldn't find the well we had all enjoyed and had so many precious day dreaming moments with. I learnt that there had been a 15 year drought which had caused it to dry and the trees around it die and disappear. It was heart wrenching to say the least. The good news is that recently the monsoons were kind to the Valley and Krishna baavi has come to life once again. Hopefully trees abounding with weaver birds weaving their nests and other creatures will appear and it will become the magical place that it once was.
The white tree symbolizes the magical spirit of this place.
