Usha Ramachandran expresses herself through sculptures and paintings. While she has created sculptures in varied media, she is best known for her bronzes. Her work is as varied as the rustic surroundings and life in Kerala from which she draws her inspiration. Her sculptures, primarily figurative, beckon the viewer to breathe life into the narratives evoked by them. Usha has exhibited her works in several solo exhibitions and her works have been included in major group exhibitions at various art and culture centres around the country - Chithrakala Parishad (Bangalore), India International Centre (New Delhi), Kerala Lalithkala Akademi, Alliance Francaise de Trivandrum etc. Her work was selected for 'Honorable Mention' in 2010 by the Kerala Lalithkala Akademi She lives and works in Trivandrum, Kerala. Artist Statement- "The aim of every artist is to arrest motion, which is life, by artificial means and hold it fixed so that a hundred years later when a stranger looks at it, it moves again, since it is life." So said Williamson Harrison Faulkner and this is part of my inspiration too. I aspire to create art that will be enjoyed by generations to come. I did not set out to produce art about one particular subject or another. But from my first exhibition itself people have commented that my works capture movement .That was not intentional. But I am quite happy about it for I feel movement signifies life. I am fascinated by all kinds of movements, in nature or manmade. It is not easy to give the true feeling of movement to viewers in a work of art and feel very happy when I succeed. The essence of my works is basically 'life' I work to satisfy my urge to create, to give form to my ideas. I find bronze most satisfying as a medium to work with, though I work in wood and other mediums too. I love to sketch and paint when not sculpting. I use my imagination to recreate the familiar. More often my inspiration comes from the events and life around me. I value my freedom to create as I wish, and whatever pleases me, in my own way. Art is a happy thought for me. I plan the whole work in my mind and improvise as I go about executing it.
