This painting is from the Bihari Satsai series of Kangra paintings. The verses of Bihari Satsai are rich in poetic flavour, elegance, subtlety of feelings and sensual delight. Brevity of expression is combined with richness of content. The Kangra artistes have captured the emotions contained in these verses so well that these paintings can be called ‘love lyrics translated into line and color’. Decorating feminine feet with pink color dye called Mahawar is an old tradition of India. An Indian woman devotes as much attention to her feet as she does to her face and hair. On special occasions feet are washed and are massaged with scented oils for pleasure and relaxation. The soles are stained red with henna and the upper foot is decorated with Mahawar in elaborate designs. Mahawar and henna not only make the feet look beautiful but also provide a cooling effect making the entire body feel fresh and cool. In this painting while creating scene of adornment of a woman before arrival of her lover, the painter has described beauty of her feet through reaction of her maid who has come to apply Mahawar on her feet.
