Theyyam is one of the traditional folk dances of Malabar, Tellichery areas in northern Kerala, where it is known as ‘Thira’ also and is enacted during the festival season by chosen communities of people conversant with the formal demands of this art form. Each theyyam has a kolam (particular character with specific costume and make up) and a ‘thottam’(Song) commemorating an old hero, like Kathirannoor Veeran, Muchilottu Bhagavati and Daivams, or Gods. The medieval Kerala mind was filled with superstitions. They believed in demons and Pagan gods. When some mortals showed signs of greatness and died heroically in feudal wars, in wrestling or in Ankam or duels, some of them are made divine or incarnated into Theyyams. Here, the Kolam or the God is that of the mischievous demon “Kuttichattan’ the mini-Satan who is notorious for being half-humorous half-serious and vengeful as a character. The Thottam concerned would be social satire. Briefly speaking, Theyyam is a ritual folk dance drama with indebtedness to the classical dances.
