Nirvedam is evidently a nude study but the painting is teeming with pathos because it suggests the lack of freedom of woman who had to put up with many tortures under feudalism. She was waiting for her paramour who did not turn up and she rolled up the bed in protestation and lay across the bed like a desperate heroine or Viraha Vidhura Nayika, more or less like Radha desperately waiting for Krishna. Here the cynosure of our eyes is the naked loveliness of the young woman but at the same time, the agony of repressed desire is also evident in her half shut eyes reflecting the pangs of an unrequited love.
