Description

A flight of fantasy – experiments with my daydreams “Fantasy is a necessary ingredient in living, it's a way of looking at life through the wrong end of a telescope.” – Dr. Seuss. I believe we need fantasies to escape from reality or should I say - to survive it. There is a certain allure to building worlds purely based on your whims! I am intrigued by a world where there is no clear distinction between fantasy, and reality, and have tried to capture that idea through these drawings and paintings. It has been a rewarding experience experimenting with the notion of fantasies and reality and my interpretations. I have used various elements that surprise and delight or provoke thoughts and ideas. I have also been influenced by buildings and structures because I worked with architects and builders early in my career. I have incorporated that affinity and added a touch of illusion to it – staircases apparently going around in circles! Buildings in clouds, and fish floating in the air! I have also used female figures in some paintings to depict how emotions and thoughts, creativity and daydreaming, and inner strength and vulnerability, all, go hand-in-hand. Textures play an important role in my paintings as well. Even though paintings and drawings are a visual experience; to my mind, should not be limited to that. I frequently use materials that are conventionally not used to create paintings; such as jute, sheet metal, rexine, etc., and create textures that add to the depth of the work of art. Through this effort and consequent exhibition, my endeavor has been to look at life from a different perspective, enjoy, and interpret it in different contexts. I hope these works of art make you wonder, and help you discover and wander into parts of your mind you didn’t know existed. I’d like to end this introduction with a quote by the great J.R.R. Tolkien: “Fantasy is escapist, and that is its glory. If a soldier is imprisoned by the enemy, don't we consider it his duty to escape?. . .If we value the freedom of mind and soul, if we're partisans of liberty, then it's our plain duty to escape, and to take as many people with us as we can!”.
