About Artist

My Most Favorite quote:- "EVERYTHING YOU CAN IMAGINE IS REAL"-- Pablo Picasso I am a self taught Artist, therefore there are no rules or methods that I adhere to. I learn with every painting and that adds to the wonder, the miracle, the gift that I've been so lucky to have been blessed with. It is a journey of self discovery and like hindustani music, my thoughts (Khayal) can be short (Chota) or long (Bada) and that determines the size of my paintings. Am inspired by all that surrounds me and therefore my work is rarely pre-meditated. My brush simply follows my heart and it continues to lead me to where ever it is, that am going to...... "ABOUT THE ARTIST Based in the city of Hyderabad, artist Vallery Puri’s optimism towards life comes alive through the various series of her art works. Her outgoing personality is reflected in her bold use of colours and strokes that are inspired by post-impressionism and modernism. The artist’s oeuvre explores mundane objects and chores, and one loses oneself in the details of gardens and landscapes that flow into bustling cities. Through her paintings, one experiences large figurative works that make one think about situations that we pass through every day without a second thought. Puri started painting as a young girl and moved on to explore various career options as an adult, before returning to painting dedicatedly in 1996. She was always inclined towards the arts from a young age and while in school and college she focused on drawing caricatures. These traits of a caricaturist often find their way into the artist’s current works through animals and figures, all of which seem to exist with their own personal stories in a parallel world. The year 2008 saw another shift in Puri’s self-taught career as an artist, when she started using oil paints. The shift in medium is also a reflection of the artist’s perception of memory and time, where she stepped back to begin appreciating the pace of life and nature. Using painting as her language of expression, Puri takes us on her journey where art and life merge through the layers of her paintings. Each painting is a frame of time, observation and reflection of the artist’s world. Though the artist creates paintings in this contemporary period of art, her work cannot be classified into a particular genre. Drawing from inspirations of European art, Puri’s influences stylistically reflect Indian traditions that blend together in a manner unique to the artist. Vallery Puri nee Dogra was born in 1964 in Pune, Maharashtra. She went to Rishi Valley School in the southern state of Andhra Pradesh and thereafter was at the J.J. School of Art in Bombay (Mumbai) for a year. She graduated in History from Lady Shriram College, Delhi University, after which she travelled extensively in her then chosen profession with Air India for ten years. This year she completes over twenty-three years of painting and exhibiting after she quit her job in the mid-nineties. She has had several solo and group shows in Pune, Mumbai, Chandigarh, Jaipur, Nairobi, Gurgaon, Delhi and now in Hyderabad. Her paintings are in private collections in India and abroad.
