Madhubani paintings (on walls) have been an important cultural feature during marriages, festivals & special occasions for the people of Mithila. However, they were largely unknown outside of the region until 1934 when they were accidentally discovered by an English officer inspecting damage caused by a massive earthquake. Over the decades these strikingly colourful paintings have become the most popular folk art form in the world.
