Description

The river Ganga is revered as 'Goddess of Purity' in Hinduism. Pilgrims travel thousands of kilometres just for a holy dip in the waters of the Ganga; or to immerse the ashes of their deceased. By doing this, they believe they can wash away their sins and attain Moksha (Nirvana). The descent of Ganga to Earth from Heaven has a story according to the Bhagvata Purana. Bhagiratha prayed to Ganga to come down to Earth and wash the souls of his ancestors, so that they could attain Nirvana. The tremendous flow of Ganga would have washed away the entire humanity on Earth. Hence Lord Shiva, who resided at the summit of a legendary mountain named Kailash, had to trap her in his hair. He then let her out on Earth with controlled force. The painting here depicts Ganga's journey from the Heaven to Earth and further to Hell, as she purifies unfortunate souls. It also depicts Ganga as woman of strength, determination and immense capabilities.
