About Artist
Muralidharan Alagar
Contemporary Artist from Chennai, India.
Most of my inspiration comes from day to day life of people in the neighborhood markets and streets. I love capturing them with plein air paintings, sketches and photographs.
Markets themselves are self contained universe where there are plenty of soulful activities beyond selling and buying. Full of colors in their dress and thoughts which I borrow for my paintings. Humanity tries best to thrive there. Particularly women sellers talk to themselves in their own world. They are happy to extend their conversation with you if you are willing. In my paintings I talk to them in the form of a little bird. Love to reveal subtle emotions and dreams behind their expression and body language in the paintings. ‘Dialogue with her’ is the series for celebrating women of daily life.
Other series of my paintings are ‘Hide & Seek’, ‘Visual Treats’, ‘Jallikattu’, and ‘Chennai’.
I did many on location or Plein-air artworks from various cities in India, mostly Chennai.
Influences of Expressionism, Fauvism, Surrealism, Folk art are stronger in my art works.
My inspiration also comes from the free and expressive drawings of kids. Art makes me feel the true myself in connection with the universe. I believe Art of seeing and Art of expression is like the heart and soul of an artist.
I am coordinating the group activities, on-location sketching and doing art appreciation in the Art group Chennai Weekend Artists which I started in 2012.
Acrylics is my preferred medium in studio. I love ink and watercolors for smaller works on locations and studio as well. Charcoal and dry pastels are also my favorite mediums.
