I was born in 1960 in Chennai. I wasn’t naturally drawn to art as a child. There was really ‘no burning desire’. My elder brother, Bhavani, meanwhile became a student of my father, who was an artist, C.L. Subramanyam. My father had an aim of making me an engineer. Like all artist’s families we too had our financial woes and this hope of me becoming an engineer was thought to provide the family with sturdy financial support. My mind however was elsewhere. I was always fascinated by the fishermen’s children in the area. Their fishing adventures at sea were the key to the door of my imagination. Little did I know that these real life/dream life experiences of a human’s personal world would one day be a feature of my art.
