The base of tanpura, rudraveena, sitar, surbahar and many other instruments is made up of gourd/pumpkin. Once the gourd is ripe, it automatically gets detached from the vine. The farmers dry it under the sun for nearly two months so that water is evaporated and the shell becomes strong. To ensure that the gourd is round is shape, the farmers change its side every other day. The proceeds from the sale of this work will be shared with the Dagar Brothers Memorial Trust, New Delhi, for the digitisation of audio-visual archives, and with the Spaces Foundation, Chennai, to support the reconstruction of the Chandra-Mandapa and establishment of the museum. The remaining money will be used to fund the artist's ongoing project of documenting the pan-Indic traditions of the instrument making.
