Need help installing your art?

At Mojarto, we believe that there’s only one rule to installing art – make it shine.

  • Choose settings, frames, mounts and walls to make sure that the artwork gets the attention it deserves. Your beautiful artwork shouldn’t be overpowered by anything. Simple, clean backgrounds and surroundings work the best to make your artwork the focal point of an area.
  • Try to hang paintings so that the focal point of the painting is at eye level. This means that if your painting has one big element – that needs to be at eye level. Ensure that you have some ‘viewing distance’ for a painting. You need to be able to stand a few feet away (2-5 feet) and appreciate the painting in its entirety.
  • If you’ve got glass on a painting, make sure no light reflects off it, obscuring the view. You can even consider having it frames with non reflective glass.
  • For canvas paintings, a great way to illuminate the depth and beauty of the painting is to install some spot lighting on it.
  • Ensure that canvas works are stretched and framed without glass, and paper artworks are framed with mount and glass.

Remember, however you install art, make sure that it’s protected from direct sunlight and moisture, both of which can really damage a beautiful piece of art.

Here are some wonderful examples of how to frame, mount and install art to make it shine.

Mojarto tries to help you choose art carefully through many features on our site. Remember, there is no ‘right’ way to select art, so you should just choose what appeals to you.

First, try using our filters on the Artworks section. They let you shortlist artworks by colour, placement etc, which will really help narrow your choices down. As you browse, use the ‘favourite’ button to compile a list of favourites that you can return to, or share with someone else. Once you’ve narrowed your choices down even further, try ArtonWall TM to see what it looks like, and really visualize the artwork in your home. If you still need help, get in touch with us through our art advisory team, who’ll come back to you with a shortlist or a look book.

  • What is art advisory?

There may be times when despite all your efforts, you haven’t found a piece of art that really speaks to you. Or, you may have a specific need in mind – like matched pieces, or a very large oil on canvas in a warm colour or some specific artist – that you couldn’t trace on the site. Or you may be an interior designer who needs a large number of artworks to do up an entire home or office space.

Whatever your need, our art advisory team will help you find, shortlist, visualize and finally purchase the art of your dreams. We will take your requirements, identify and shortlist works, and even create a lookbook, so you can find the right piece of art.

  • How do I choose between different mediums like oils, watercolours etc?

It is true that different mediums all have qualities unique to each of them. For example, at least some of the beauty of oil on canvas stems from the techniques used by the artist in layering, texturing to give depth to a work. On the other hand, watercolours are more moody, and its colours have a huge impact on a space – ranging from bright and vibrant to dark and impressionistic.

However, at Mojarto, we’d always recommend that you choose a piece of art not by the medium but on the basis of how it speaks to you. Keep in mind though, that different mediums require different kinds of care and handling, so you might want to eliminate choices on this basis. For example – moist and humid climates aren’t the best environments for paper works, and they’ll need to be glass mounted.

Other than these considerations, purchase a piece of art that you like and enjoy.

  • Will the photograph on the site be the same as it will look in real life?

The photographs on the Mojarto site go through many quality checks before it is uploaded, so it’s as close to the original as you’ll get in a photo form. If anything, the work will usually look better in reality. However, the impact of art depends on many different things - the size, the mount, the frame, the light received on the surface, and many other factors. If you’re still unsure, you can see what our buyers have to say about the works they have purchased here.

Prints

  • What are prints?

Prints are reproduction of an original artwork, printed on paper or canvas. Prints are a great starting point for someone wishing to start collecting art as they are affordable and low maintenance. Buy a print of a great piece of original art if you really want to see how art can transform a room or a space. They’re also great for young collectors, transit apartments, bachelor pads, hostel rooms and the like. However, prints will never have the same impact as the original artwork, not the least because the medium and size are different than the original. Also, they don’t have intrinsic value, and so can’t be looked upon as investments.

  • What are open edition prints? How are they different from limited edition prints?

Open edition prints are reproductions of an original piece of art on paper or canvas, and can be re-printed as long as the artist wishes them to be available. The Paper and Canvas prints available on Mojarto are open edition prints. On the other hand, limited edition prints are printed by the artist who is a print maker and usually prints a limited series. These prints can be etchings, wood cuts, lithographs, or serigraphs. They are hand printed by the artist and normally are numbered as ‘ 1 of 10’, ‘2 of 10’ etc.. These are as good as original works of art.On Mojarto, we allow artists to open up their works to open edition prints, so collectors can have the option of purchasing a print in case you do not wish to buy the original. Open edition prints are far more affordable but also lack the intrinsic investment value that an original has.

  • Will I know if a print is on paper or canvas before buying it?

If you click on the Print against the painting image, you will see the option of both Paper and Canvas in a couple of different sizes. If you don’t understand any of them, do get in touch with us before buying something!

  • Why should I buy a print?

Prints are a great way to start collecting art. The prints sold on Mojarto are a great place to get started! Prints are a great way to change the mood of a room, brighten up a space, or try something new if you’re still uncertain of buying the original. However, we do hope that you’ll eventually buy the originals, since prints, while as close as can be in terms of art, lack the oomph & impact of original and are not an investment.

  • What is staff recommends?

At Mojarto we are all passionate about art. We go through hundreds of good artworks everyday, but there are a fewthat we completely fall in love with! ‘Staff recommends’ is what we think are amazing pieces of art, from our point of view.

  • How big are prints usually?

On Mojarto, print sizes vary, depending on the size of the original artwork, but are usually no larger than a maximum size of 22-36 inches. In the case of small prints, unless the space you intend to install it in is also small, you may want to buy a pair, a trio, or a set of four to really increase the impact of the installation.

  • Are the prints framed?

No, the prints will be shipped to you rolled. You will have to mount and frame the Paper prints, and stretch and frame the Canvas prints.

Shoot in bright, soft light and make sure your images aren’t too dark or too light. When you take a photo of your paintings or your other art, make sure that your camera is parallel to the artwork, and keep minimal space around the object you’re shooting to get a large, clear image. • Protect the painting with a layer of butter paper on the painted surface. Any material that comes in contact with the surface of the painting could potentially damage it.
    • Use the correct types of packing paper like glassine/ butter paper as the first layer between the painting and any packing material like bubble wrap or newspaper. DO NOT use printed paper, newspaper, or anything printed with ink to create the first layer of packing.
    • Now the roll the canvas/ paper and cover it in a layer of bubble wrap to protect from moisture.
    • Insert this roll into a PVC or Cardboard tube and seal it from both ends.
    • If you are sending the artwork as stretched or framed, secure the glass by sticking masking tape in a cross across the glass.
