Chicory Chai is a design label for handcrafted ornaments and accessories rooted in unpretentious and rustic India. The label has evolved out of conscious artistic choices defining our understanding of the contemporary - handmade over industrial, anomaly over conformity, with a simple mission to create a lifestyle of emancipation; a lifestyle engrained in simplicity, effortlessness and belonging. Handmade, for us, echoes luxury. It reflects that indigenous way of life, of bygone times. Like the ancient relics, we revel in the imperfections that impart uniqueness and speak of the personal touch that each piece offers. They are a testimony to the fact that every Chicory Chai piece is made by a human. The collections are dauntlessly honest; we don’t hide the marks, irregularities, solders or dents. Rather, we show them off, making a poetic enquiry into the innate nature of materials. Chicory Chai celebrates the traditional savoir-faire of 5000 years while telling the stories close to our heart. For us, there is a thin line between aesthetics and concept: our pieces are as much sculptural accessories to make a bold statement as much as an object of fine art to be admired.
Chicory Chai as an idea came up when I was working on a concept which would merge Indian sensibilities with contemporary aesthetics. I wanted to use Indian handicraft skills, commonly found in traditional jewelry to accommodate into a more contemporary and artistic look. The blue flower of Chicory stands for romanticism and that is the basis of Chicory Chai. The techniques come out of the design which actually comes out of the story and so it's an interrelated process but it's usually around the design, so we use filigree and sometimes granulation. Our collections include the 'Anna' with the Indian coins and 'Old and Blues' which talks about a romantic experience where you want to get back to that one particular evening when you're missing your loved one.
