Meme Regime Celebrating Online World's Inside Jokes

Gunjan Tripathi 04 Sep 2018

This weekend, TIFA Working Studios, Pune is bringing an offline event in celebration of the online world’s inside jokes; ‘Meme Regime’.

The event is curated by Anuj Nakade who tells us how memes have changed the communication in the digital era “Memes are spreading like wildfire since most of the content in India is now being produced by mainstream media channels as well as independent writers and comedians on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram. The virality of image and relevance is what is affecting the communication in the digital era. It's easy to design, access, and share. It is perhaps the most democratic medium to communicate in the digital era”

The headline of the event is a panel discussion with the panellists including Karan Shah, Pune based meme-artist and an upcoming stand-up comedian, Sangram Sadhale, Meme dealer and 4chan forum survivor, Abhinit Khanna, Arts manager and the artist behind #artworldmemes and Shubhi Dixit, marketing and micro-content professional, poetess and meme connoisseur.
The Panel discussion would focus on understanding the meme ”culture as a whole”.  “The geography, philosophy, routes and patterns of circulation of memes, history, ethics and why and how are memes staying relevant as well as democratic in the hostile world of the internet; and are the unique cultural element of our times,” says Nakade

The panellists will be covering a range of topics like defining a meme; the supply and demand of memes; their critical and analytical aspects; use of memes in commentary over society and politics; their aesthetic and verbal appeal; the ethics of making and sharing memes; philosophy of memeing and how they are shaping the world.
We asked Abhinit how he comes up with his meme-creation to which he, shares “#ArtWorldMemes usually gets triggered from daily conversations with artists and events in the Indian art world. I use bizarre Bollywood images from 80's and 90's who appear to be wearing now dated clothes and twisted poses. I find my inspiration from various Bollywood accounts on Instagram that I come across in the explore section.”  What is funny may also be offensive to some to which Abhinit adds he makes “more offensive and politically incorrect memes” to deal with those who get offended.

Meme Regime will also include screenings about the history of memes and how memes can step into education.
Memes have come a long way to be recognised at par with mainstream art amongst art lovers. Abhinit says “Some of them are consuming memes without realising they are memes”. He holds the view that “It's very much a mainstream thing in 2018”

Anuj adds “people who aren’t recognising them as art in the traditional sense will soon have to.” “It’s a culture that has consumed everything. Literally, thousands of dollars were raised two weeks ago for cancer research because Stefan Karl Steffanson (a humble meme and a beautiful man) died of cancer. It’s consequential, witty and genuinely unique as an aesthetic, how memes are evolving.” “As a Traditional “art”, look up Grandayy or Dolan Dark, who are genuinely recognised as the next thing is microcontent entertainment, and they’re kids who learnt photoshop and made stupid jokes on the internet. It has made its impact pretty significantly.”

On being asked about the future of meme-culture Anuj says, “Well, they will get more cryptic. They’re holding the fabric of the internet together; as we speak Johnny Johnny has made it as a meme; and probably we will see a meme as good as that or Dat boi in our lifetime. The meme ecosystem is thriving right now and looks like it will for a while now."

The event also features an art exhibition of the best memes collected from a meme submission forum. The forum will be open till 5th September 2018 on social media and submissions can be posted with #memeregimeTIFA.

(Meme Regime will take place on September 7, 4 pm onwards at TIFA Working Studios, Sadhu Vaswani Circle, Pune)
