Five Famous Printmakers From India

Printmaking was introduced in the 16th century by the Dutch, in India however it was only in the 20th century that printmaking was taken up seriously by the Fine Artists. It largely remains unpopular among artists as well as collectors due to the high amount of skill, technique and time involved. Yet, the admirers of printmaking take it as an art form that stands for diligence along with creativity.

Let’s have a look at some famous Indian print artists whose works have acquired prominence in the art world:

1. K G. Subramanyan

He was perhaps the most influential and well-known printmakers in India. He studied at Shanti Niketan and later headed the Department of Fine Arts at MSU Baroda. He was a versatile practitioner of various forms of arts along with Printmaking and has produced a wide range of prints using lithography.

2. Laxma Goud

Laxma Goud has worked with various mediums like etching, paintings, sculpture and gouache. Despite being educated at MS University Baroda, he chose to live and work in his native town of Nazimpur in Andhra Pradesh. His closeness to rural life is well reflected in his works. His works mostly revolve around intense sexual themes. His has experimented extensively with aquatint.

3. V.S. Gaitonde

Gaitonde is more famous as an abstract painter; however he has also been an acclaimed master printmaker. Most of his works are inspired by Zen philosophy. He has majorly used planographic printmaking techniques in his works.

4. Sakti Burman

Born in 1935 in Calcutta, Sakti spent most of his life in France, though maintained good ties with India. He is known for his lithography. His works have a sense of mysticism with a grace, beauty and a sense of tranquillity.

5. Kavita Jaiswal

Kavita is a contemporary artist who has explored various forms of mixed media and different techniques in her artwork. With over 35 years of art practice, Kavita has evolved into a fine print artist, showcasing works which are figurative, geometric and abstract. Her works have a good contrast and abstraction which give an element of realism.
