Urmila Devi is a state awardee specializing in the Godna painting style of Madhubani or Mithila art whose work has been collected by buyers from around the world. She has experience of more than 45 years and paints on both handmade paper and canvas.
This Lokchitra painting is made using natural colors on handmade paper. Lokchitra is the deity and human painting style where inspiration is taken from the sacred texts of Hindu mythologies. The coloring scheme here is of two styles - Kachni (hatching) where a limited color palette is adopted to fill the painting with delicate fine lines and Bharni (shading) where solid colors are used to shade and fill in the image. Earlier, artists from the Brahmin and Kayashth class represented this style however, this distinction has now blurred and caste is no more a constraint for creativity.
