Washerman questions Sita on her sincerity, Lakshman going to leave Sita in the forest: When Lord Ram returned back to his kingdom from Lanka and became the king, he used to follow a Vedic practice of sending spies inside and outside of his kingdom to know what was happening around them. Once one of his spies overheard a washerman named Krodhana defaming Sita. He had put allegations on the chastity and piousness of Sita having stayed in another man’s house for eleven months. Although Lord Ram always knew that his wife was pure, but his own people alleging his wife made him very upset. He was in a fix what he should do to prove the innocence of his wife. It was then Ma Sita went to him and told him that she must go away from him so as to protect the Dharma (righteous path) and the legacy and honor of Ram’s forefathers. She said that Ram must come across as an ideal and a fair king in the eyes of his kingdom. After this conversation, she leaves the palace and this painting is depicting that scene where Lakshman is going to leave her in the forest.
