I lived in a government hostel, which is a B D D chawl in Worli of Bombay. The daily observations of the people living here became my first and crucial inspiration where the city is filled with diversity in language and lifestyle. From my hostel room’s window, the façade of these buildings gave me an outlook of the lifestyles of people residing here. B D D chawl is a housing system built between the years 1920 to 1925. It is in a locality where all the approximately fifty buildings are designed homogenously. All the rooms within are again similar designs, where each floor has similar common bathroom and toilets to share. The families here belong to lower middle class. The windows that are seen from the street seem to be the only doorway to understand and represent the lifestyles of people within. They use these small window balconies to place many things like bicycle, scooter, AC, cooler. The pattern of the pipes that run on the façade represents the common bathroom and toilet system.
