I have tried to explore Husain’s journey of painting a version of Gaja Gamini on the wall of Azad Hind Dhaba in Kolkata. In Husain’s drawing, 1996 a female figure poses in front of a horse. A line from a song of Madhuri Dixit’s film “Rajkumar” displays the erotic fervour that Husain recognised in Madhuri Dixit. In 1999 when Husain was preparing for his film Gaja Gamini the drawing was edited and colured, the horse was replaced by a playful elephant. The still covered mystery in Husain’s journey that may have germinated from this very restaurant and bloomed into his famous works of Gaja Gamini is the central theme of my work. A half drawn shutter with a darkness beyond it reflects the unknown and the still existent horse drawing in the final work of Husain’s Gaja Gamini painted on the shutter refer to the journey of Husain during these 4 years that allure me.
