Ardhanareeswara is the symbolic unity of knowledge and nature depicted by a form of Lord Shiva merged with his consort Parvati. A national award winner, the late Chano Devi initiated the Mithila or Madhubani Godna style of painting that was inspired by tattoos, a style adopted by a large number of Dalit women. This Lokchitra painting is made using natural colors mixed with Babul glue on cow dung washed handmade paper. Lokchitra is the deity and human painting style where inspiration is taken from the sacred texts of Hindu mythologies. The coloring scheme here is of two styles - Kachni (hatching) where a limited color palette is adopted to fill the painting with delicate fine lines and Bharni (shading) where solid colors are used to shade and fill in the image. Earlier, artists from the Brahmin and Kayashth class represented this style however, this distinction has now blurred and caste is no more a constraint for creativity.
