I used to paint since childhood. My father, Shri Badrivishal Pitti, was an avid art collector, so I grew up with all forms of art around me. Mr M F Husain was a close friend of my father and often stayed with us in Hyderabad. Watching him paint left a deep impression on me.
After marriage, I moved to Delhi and joined Triveni Kala Sangam. Later in 1983, when they opened a ceramic department, I enrolled because ceramics had always fascinated me. Although this shut down very soon, I had touched clay, and it was I who was moulded! I brought home some clay and started making vases. A friend took me to Delhi Blue Pottery. I started going there for glazing and firing. Mr Mansimran Singh taught me the technicalities and encouraged me a lot.
The immense potential and creativity within a lump of clay fills me with wonder and joy. Ceramics is one of the most thrilling art form where the artist is never in full control. The fire totally transforms my offering into a gift, leaving me awestruck and humbled.
When I work with clay, I am in harmony with the five elements – earth is mixed with water, space is filled with form, air dries it, and the fire gives it strength.
I have always been awed by the incredible beauty of nature. It never ceases to inspire me, reflecting as it does, the many aspects of divinity, and fills me with ineffable calm, serenity and wholeness. It is this essence of spirituality and creativity I strive to express through my work. I thank God for this passion.

Ceramic artist Usha Garodia creates works that fall far outside the often conventional wisdom of the craft. Her pieces are semi-abstract, hinting at a subject rather than stating it, and they are steeped in a long personal history. Here, we follow the artist as she creates a new work, tells us about some of her pieces on Mojarto.com, and shares some stories from her personal history with artist MF Husain.
I was born in Hyderabad, India. I graduated from Osmania University.
