Saba Hasan is a multidisciplinary artist working on book installations, photographs, paintings, videos and sound since 1998. Her forte is abstract and philosophical art exploring the realm of spirituality, values of life, poetics of nature and truth.
Saba has exhibited widely in India and internationally in Paris, New York, Lisbon, Salzburg, Milan, Colombo, Singapore and Florence. She is a recipient of the prestigious Raza Award for painting in 2005 and international fellowships from Syracuse University, New York and the Cultural Ministry, France in 2006. Her latest body of work comprising photographs and videos is being presented at the Tenshun Okakura gallery, by the Japan Foundation, New Delhi.

  • About Artist

    Saba Hasan is a multidisciplinary artist working on book installations, photographs, paintings, videos and sound since 1998. Her forte is abstract and philosophical art exploring the realm of spirituality, values of life, poetics of nature and truth.
    Saba has exhibited widely in India and internationally in Paris, New York, Lisbon, Salzburg, Milan, Colombo, Singapore and Florence. She is a recipient of the prestigious Raza Award for painting in 2005 and international fellowships from Syracuse University, New York and the Cultural Ministry, France in 2006. Her latest body of work comprising photographs and videos is being presented at the Tenshun Okakura gallery, by the Japan Foundation, New Delhi.

    She has an MA in Cultural Anthropology with certification in studio art from Ecole D’Arts Visuals, Lausanne, Switzerland and art history from Cambridge University, UK.

  • Exhibitions

    Her work was at the 55th Venice Biennale at Fondazione Querini Stampalia, as part of the Imago Mundi Collection (2013). Her soundscape “Walking in Hauz Khas” was in an international show mapping sound segments from 20 countries on Osso Radio Europe (2013) and her voice installation called “Rehearsal for a Poem” was part of the art festival in the Hohenburg Castle in Austria and the Gandhi-King Plaza in India International Centre, New Delhi (2012); her Deer Park photographs got Honorable mention at the Moscow Foto Awards (2014) and her video of poems screened at the Kochi Muziris Biennale of Contemporary Art (2015). The Japan Foundation is presenting Saba’s videos and photographs in March (2016) and her sound walk along 83rd street, will be a part of composer John Adam’s work at the Metropolitan museum, New York (2016). Her voice work “I belong here” is a part of the IAWRT Festival and the Japan Foundation is presenting her latest photographs and videos in March (2016)

  • Award & Recognition

    Saba has received the Raza National Award for painting (2005) and international fellowships from Syracuse University, New York, from the French Cultural Ministry, Paris (2006), the George Keyt Foundation (2002) and Oscar Kokoschka Academy, Salzburg (2010). Her video “La Verite/Haqeeqat/Truth” from the Sarai Reader 09 exhibition, which explores the philosophical and ethical aspects of truth was nominated for the Celeste Contemporary Art Prize (2014) and screened at Assab One, Milan. Her photograph from the series "walking in deer park" shown here got chosen for honourable mention at the Moscow Foto Awards 2014.
