B. Kiran Kumari is a self-taught free-lance artist based in Tirupathi, Andhra Pradesh who comes to art from a background of journalism and social activism. After showing extensively in Hyderabad, Bangalore, and Chennai, ‘Enlightened’ is Kiran’s first solo show in Delhi, running from April 21- May 5, 2010 at Reflection Art Gallery & Studios in Shahpur Jat.

‘Enlightened’ is a collection of 36 paintings, a careful study in oil and dry pastels of light’s interplay with line and space. Using realism with a dose of expressionism Kiran plays with the ubiquitous relationship between electric wires and street lamps, exploring the gently surrealistic illumination of wires at night, studying their movement and division against bright blue skies, and capturing the haunting effects that single points of light cast on everyday urban spaces.

Her study invokes a surprisingly contemplative feeling of solitude and stillness, even amidst the joyous and fractious cityscape of urban India. To Kiran wires are potent metaphors for relationships and communication, and the street lamp an ever-present companion to solitude.

Although all her works were produced in small-town Tirupathi they capture an urban burgeoning and yearning that could easily be New Delhi itself.

After an active career as an award-winning journalist and a social activist working with government and non-government agencies on gender sensitization and community media Kiran took up painting full-time in 2006. Even as a professional painter Kiran remains a trustee to the LSN Foundation, a trust working with marginalized communities in Hyderabad, and is an executive member of Samhitha Rural Development, a society for self-reliance working in Tirupathi, Andhra Pradesh.
