Born 1968 in Mumbai, Julius Macwan, graduated from the JJ School of Art in the city. He lived and worked in Chennai for several years where he started his own art school, the Julius Macwan Institute, later moving to Mumbai which is his current base. Society- its politics and culture; figure prominently in this young artist's bold and colourful work. Personal and social issues underline his aesthetics and creativity which make use of varied media and materials including photography and installations, besides his paintings in acrylic and watercolour. His most recent show in Delhi entitled 'The Death of Magic' included some large canvases as well as digital and multi-media works engaged with a recurring theme- change of seasons, where his paintings take on a black or red heart to symbolise the transitions in our thoughts and emotions. This socially active artist has also done artists' residencies including one at the Indian School of Business where he successfully worked to mesh concepts of culture, religion, gender-politics and history with business.
