I, Sri Gautam Paul, was born in Kolkata, The metropolis of the state of West Bengal in India.
From my boyhood days various creative activities like drawing, painting, composing poems and singing songs attracted my interest and attention; consequently I joined the Govt. College of Art and Craft and got my BVA degree in 1989.
Initially I did not feel like engaging myself wholeheartedly in drawing and painting casually I displayed my concern on those. I had an ardent desire to become an Art Director in any Advertisement Agency of repute.
Subsequently I joined Ogilvy & Mather Company to earn my living.
I got a tremendous set back in my plans and programmes in 1997 when my father left this land of living. I was then quite in the lurch. I saw death from very close for the first time in my life. I was overwhelmed with grief and suddenly I had my further realization about this material world.
This realization of this heavenly bliss which my father could enjoy by this death and stern realities of this mortal world made my mental make up to express myself in a different manner through my paintings.
My paintings bear, the testimony of my inner feelings of a duality between darkness and light, between real and unreal between bliss and sufferings, between weal and woe. In award that can be described as a combination of the opposites. My products express that eternal conflict between acceptance and protest, contentment and dissatisfaction. I like to make man conscious about this divine discontent through my works.
I hope to receive wider support in my mission. If I can win the hearts of my viewers and the critics of my works, I shall deem it a heavenly gift bestowed on me by the providence which would inspire me to lead a peaceful life amidst this discordant and conflicting world of today.
