Born in 1976, Arunangshu has a BVA from the Indian College of Arts & Draftsmanship.JN0-533 Since his graduation in 2000, he has been a participant in numerous exhibitions and camps, including one in 2008 in Dubai at the Indian embassy, along with M.F.Hussain, Poritosh Sen, Paresh Maity, Akbar Padamsee, Frances N Souza.
His sponsors include the Birla Academy of Art & Culture, Art India & WWF India (at New Delhi), Contemporary Art India, Metropolitan Art Salone, Gorky Sadan, R.A.D., and numerous art galleries in Kolkata and Delhi.
In 2011, Arunangshu was awarded the prestigious all-India Birla Academy of Fine Arts Award for excellence in drawing.
Arunangshu says that he took up the pencil at the tender age of three, and claims he has “never stopped drawing since then.” His main inspiration is the world of nature, especially animals and insects, where he finds simplicity in the pleasure of living, the joy of life, interdependency, a struggle to survive.
Human civilization on the other hand is both malicious and bloody, bringing pain and conflict to the natural world. He often portrays human beings as cruel and ferocious animals, the wild and carnivorous beasts of the gloomy dark jungles.
The artist in him finds painting…… “much like writing a daily diary…….depending on my feelings, I create beautiful figures, colour combinations, dark gloomy portraits, black & white forms.” He agrees that his portrayal of animals is often “peculiar”, and one of his recurring themes is the gathering of unidentifiable animals under a tree full of fruits These are not humans or animals – they are more like living beings of ancient earth who appear on his canvas of their own accord. They are invisible to the human eye but are nurtured by a compassionate earth.
Arunangshu's works are often pure constructions of lines, planes, forms, colours…..they seek to approach a truth concerning mankind. They turn their face away from the egotistical in man, from hatred and greed and lust. They hark back to primitive art, but the simplicity of subject-matter and technique is deceptive – his is a highly sophisticated style, gaining fast recognition in the world of art as a fresh new voice.
